BANKSY
Banksy is one of the most recognisable and influential figures in contemporary street art. Emerging from Bristol’s graffiti scene in the 1990s, he developed a distinctive stencil language that combines dark humour with sharp political and social commentary. Children, rats, police, soldiers and familiar cultural symbols recur throughout his work, often reworked to question power, conflict, consumerism and everyday life. What began as interventions on walls and bridges grew into an international practice spanning prints, paintings, installations, film and large-scale projects. Works and projects such as Banksy vs Bristol Museum, Dismaland and The Walled Off Hotel pushed street art into new contexts while retaining the directness and unpredictability that first defined his work. His identity remains unconfirmed, adding to the mythology without overshadowing the strength of the imagery itself. The Arts Hole presents a curated selection of Banksy works in New Zealand, bringing one of contemporary street art’s most culturally significant bodies of work to collectors locally.
