Component is an Auckland-based contemporary artist whose practice grew from the streets of Grey Lynn, where he taught himself the art of stencilling and began using public space as a place for observation and social commentary. Concept and place remain central to his work. Familiar images, found materials and cultural references are often shifted into unexpected contexts, allowing the surroundings and physical surface of a piece to become part of its meaning. Over more than two decades, Component has worked across street art, murals, original gallery works and large-scale community projects throughout New Zealand. His practice moves between humour, social observation and more reflective themes, while retaining the clarity and directness of the stencil language from which it began. Whether working on a city wall, reclaimed object or gallery piece, Component’s work is grounded in the idea that context can change how an image is seen — and that art can create meaning both in public space and in the places we live.
