How to Paint Graffiti and Get Away With It is one of the more playful images from Steve Lazarides’ photographic archive of Banksy’s formative years. The photograph presents Banksy with his identity characteristically concealed, holding a fictitious graffiti manual in front of his face while one of his works appears on the railway bridge behind.
The combination of staged anonymity, street setting and deliberately provocative title captures much of the humour and mythology that surrounded Banksy’s early career. Rather than revealing the artist, Lazarides’ photograph preserves the mystery — documenting someone whose public image was already becoming inseparable from his refusal to be seen.
Lazarides worked closely with Banksy as photographer and agent during his rise from the Bristol street-art scene, giving him unusual access to both the artwork and the moments surrounding its creation. The resulting photographic archive has become an important visual record of a period when much of Banksy’s work was still temporary, undocumented and vulnerable to disappearance.
