Balloon Fight draws from Steve Lazarides’ extraordinary photographic record of Banksy’s early street work. The photograph captures Girl with Balloon in its original urban environment, with a passer-by moving through the scene and the anti-war slogan “Fight the Fighters Not Their Wars” visible on the surrounding wall.

Rather than isolating Banksy’s image from its setting, Lazarides preserves the street around it — the architecture, graffiti, movement and temporary nature of the work itself. The result is both an artwork and a document of a period when many of Banksy’s now-iconic images still existed primarily on city walls.

Lazarides first met Banksy in Bristol in 1997 and subsequently became his photographer, agent and one of the key figures documenting and facilitating his early career. Over the following eleven years he photographed works, installations, exhibitions and behind-the-scenes moments that would later form the basis of his Banksy Captured archive and books.

The 2020 Wood Edition combines Lazarides’ photograph with a separately screen-printed balloon on OSB board and was produced in a limited edition of just 88.
