Mauro Viale is a Queenstown-based artist whose practice brings together traditional printmaking, collage and a visual language shaped by architecture and early modernism. Growing up in an artistic and architectural family, Viale spent much of his childhood in his grandparents’ studio. Surrounded by art and design, he developed an early fascination with geometry, structure, proportion and the relationship between organic and constructed form. His current work begins with hand-carved linoleum blocks, printed by hand before being cut, rotated, layered and reassembled into unique collages. Through this process, texture, repetition and chance become part of the composition, allowing each work to develop gradually rather than from a fixed image. The resulting forms sit somewhere between architecture, sculpture and abstraction. Fragmented planes, stacked geometries and shifting perspectives can suggest buildings, monuments, vessels or figures without resolving into a single reading. Mauro Viale creates work where traditional craft, architectural structure and imagination meet — transforming printed fragments into bold, sculptural compositions.
