Keith Haring (1958–1990) was an American artist whose bold lines, animated figures and instantly recognisable symbols became one of the defining visual languages of the 1980s. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and raised in nearby Kutztown, Haring moved to New York in 1978 to study at the School of Visual Arts. He quickly became part of the city’s energetic downtown scene, alongside artists, musicians and performers including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. In 1980, Haring began drawing with white chalk on unused black advertising panels throughout New York’s subway system. These rapidly executed public works allowed him to communicate directly with thousands of commuters and became central to his belief that art should exist beyond the traditional gallery. His energetic figures, radiant babies, barking dogs and rhythmic lines soon became familiar across the city. By 1982, Haring had made his acclaimed Soho gallery debut with Tony Shafrazi and was rapidly gaining international recognition. His work moved easily between streets, galleries, public murals, posters and commercial projects, while maintaining a distinctive visual language built around movement, connection and direct communication. Haring also used his work to address social issues and devoted considerable energy to public projects, children’s programmes and activism. After being diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, he established the Keith Haring Foundation in 1989 to support AIDS organisations and children’s causes and to preserve and expand access to his work. Although his career lasted little more than a decade, Haring created a body of work with extraordinary cultural reach. His imagery remains immediately recognisable around the world, while his work is held in major museum collections and continues to connect the worlds of contemporary art, street culture and public space.
