TROY TANNER
Troy Tanner is a Queenstown-based photographer and filmmaker whose work has grown from a lifelong relationship with mountains, snow and adventure. Photography was never originally the destination. The camera began as a way of documenting the places he travelled, the people he rode with and the experiences that came with them. Over time, that instinct to record became a creative practice spanning landscape, action, commercial photography and film. Years spent working in alpine environments have taught Tanner to look for moments that exist only briefly — the first light touching a ridge line, cloud breaking around a summit, or a rider committing to a line. His snow-sports photography has documented some of New Zealand’s leading athletes and appeared across major tourism and mountain-sports projects. At the centre of the work is a simple standard: a photograph should be strong enough that he would want to live with it himself. Each image becomes both artwork and souvenir — a way of carrying the feeling of an experience long after the moment has passed. For TROY TANNER, a photograph is more than a record of the adventure — it is the part that comes home.
