Tide of Awareness transforms a found stop sign into both surface and message. Designed to interrupt movement and demand attention, the familiar red sign becomes the backdrop for two children looking upward, creating a striking contrast between warning, uncertainty and the possibility of what lies ahead.
The work responds to themes of conflict, climate change and the pressures inherited by younger generations, but its emphasis is ultimately on resilience. Rather than presenting the children as overwhelmed by their surroundings, Component gives them a sense of expectation and forward momentum.
The use of a reclaimed road sign is particularly characteristic of Component’s wider practice, in which place, context and familiar cultural objects are often reworked to create new meaning. Its original surface and urban history remain part of the artwork, connecting the finished piece directly back to the street.
At 75 × 75 cm, the work retains the physical presence and instantly recognisable geometry of the original sign while transforming a utilitarian object into a unique contemporary artwork.
