Four-layer stencil on reclaimed yacht section
Found in Auckland Harbour
96 × 52 cm
Original artwork
2023
Hope’s Silent Echo transforms a weathered section of a wrecked yacht into the surface for Component’s layered stencil work. Rather than concealing the history of the material, the work allows its texture and previous life to remain visible beneath the image, creating a strong relationship between subject and surface.
The reclaimed yacht section gives the piece a history before the artwork itself. Recovered after being damaged and washed ashore in Auckland Harbour, the discarded material is given a new purpose, with its previous life becoming an active part of the composition rather than simply a background.
The work reflects themes of resilience, uncertainty and hope that recur throughout Component’s practice. His use of found materials and familiar imagery allows everyday objects to take on new meaning, connecting the finished artwork back to the environment from which it came.
As a unique original work, Hope’s Silent Echo brings together stencil technique, reclaimed material and the physical history of the harbour into a piece that could never be reproduced in exactly the same form.
