Original design created for the 1983 Festival

The original design was created for the 17th Montreux Jazz Festival in 1983 and forms part of a trio of official posters designed by Keith Haring for that year’s Festival.

The commission arrived at a pivotal moment in Haring’s career. His chalk drawings on unused advertising panels throughout the New York subway system had already established the energetic line and instantly recognisable figures that would become his visual language, and in 1982 his acclaimed Tony Shafrazi Gallery exhibition marked his arrival within the New York art world.

The following year, that language travelled to Montreux. Haring created three poster designs for the Festival, each combining animated human figures with vivid fluorescent colour and a strong sense of rhythm. During his time in Montreux, his involvement extended beyond the posters as he continued drawing and painting around the Festival, bringing the spontaneity of his public practice into the event itself.

The result captures a moment when Haring’s work was rapidly moving from the streets and subways of New York to an international audience, while retaining the directness and accessibility that remained central to his practice.
