MEEP - DEFACED

Acrylic on wood.

This piece brings together two defining aspects of her practice — the raw, abstract language of graffiti and the controlled, painterly approach of studio portraiture — in deliberate juxtaposition. A softly rendered figure is overlaid with bold, graphic interventions, creating a tension between visibility and obstruction. These layered marks reference urban defacement while functioning as a formal device, introducing a sense of disruption and visual chaos that fractures the surface and destabilises the image. The collision of expressive realism and hard-edged abstraction reflects the inherent chaos of holding both street and studio practices simultaneously, where control and instinct exist in constant opposition. As the last remaining work from this foundational body of work, Defaced holds particular significance. It stands as an early yet resolved example of Su’a-Hulsbosch’s studio practice, making it a compelling acquisition for collectors interested in contemporary painting shaped by street culture and artists whose work operates across public, private, and institutional contexts.
