Mental Landscapes

CABNOV’s first solo exhibition in New Zealand presents a new body of work exploring memory, emotion and internal experience through a distinctive visual language of architecture, landscape and biomorphic form.

Across the exhibition, structures bend, float and transform; figures emerge from imagined environments; and hidden symbols reward a slower, more attentive way of looking.

About CABNOV

CABNOV is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist based between the Philippines and New Zealand. Her practice sits at the intersection of memory, emotion and visual discovery, developing a distinctive world in which architecture, landscape and biomorphic figures become vessels for internal experience.

Working across painting, mural and sculpture, CABNOV invites viewers to slow down and search. Hidden letters, symbols and visual clues are woven throughout the work, transforming each composition into an active process of discovery

The Exhibition

Mental Landscapes develops from CABNOV’s ongoing interest in memory, internal monologue and the ways emotion can become embedded within imagined environments.

Her paintings are populated by biomorphic figures, fragments of architecture and shifting landscapes that feel at once familiar and invented. Forms appear to float, bend and reorganise themselves, creating spaces that resist a single fixed reading.

Throughout the work, hidden letters, symbols and visual clues encourage a slower form of looking. This sense of discovery draws on CABNOV’s childhood fascination with searching for concealed figures within Where’s Waldo scenes, transforming observation into an active and playful experience.

The vibrant palette is not simply decorative. It operates as a deliberate counterpoint to the complexity of the internal worlds being explored — allowing humour, optimism and psychological tension to coexist within the same visual space.
